An innovative French course

combining CEFR language proficiency criteria and Ontario curriculum requirements

to help students improve their performance in academic achievement and communicative fluency.

 

2020-2021 T.E.A French Course Introductions

 

French Course Level A1 (Beginner) is further broken down into three sessions A1.1, A1.2, and A1.3.

Each session includes 24 hours of classroom study. At the end of session 3, the student is expected to achieve the Grade 7-8 Core French level in public schools. Students at this level can:

       understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type

       introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they have

       interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help read a variety of simple materials, 100 to 150 words long, and demonstrate understanding by using appropriate pronunciation, liaison (e.g., nous avons), intonation, and language in familiar contexts

       write ideas and facts, or provide written responses to simple questions, using simple sentences

 

French Course Level A2 (Intermediate) is further broken down into five sessions A2.1, A2.2, A2.3, A2.4, and A2.5. Each session includes 24 hours of classroom study. At the end of A2.5, the student is expected to achieve the Grade 10-12 Core French level in public schools. Student at the A2 level can:

 

       listen to and talk about short, oral texts in structured and open-ended situations and can function in social situations

       read a variety of classroom and simple authentic materials, 200 to 400 words long, and demonstrate understanding;

       communicate information and ideas in writing, in structured and open-ended situations, for different purposes;

       identify and use the vocabulary and the grammar and language conventions appropriate in making simple transactions in shops, post offices or banks; get simple information about travel

 

French Immersion Writing: For Grade 3 to Grade 5 Immersion or Extended students

The course is intended to provide complemented and enhanced supports in French writing and reading to help students succeed in the French Immersion program and stimulate their interest in reading and writing French. The teacher will adapt to the Ontario curriculum and CEFR contents to learning environments. Students improve their capabilities through role-playing, individual/ team projects (presentation, storytelling), or writing exercises with tales or stories. Grammar, vocabulary, language conventions (rules of pronunciation, linking words, and correction of common Anglicism) are the focus of the course.

 

Gifted Math in French: For Grade 2 to 7 Immersion or Extended students

The course provides challenges beyond the regular school math curriculum, strengthens creative problem solving, and logical reasoning skills. It strengthens creative problem solving and logical reasoning skills further develops gifted students' intellect in math otherwise can not be addressed in schools.

 

 

Pre-IB French Preparation Course: For Grade 7 Core French students

The course takes into account both the level of the students at the time they register and the content required by the International Baccalaureate. The course combines academic excellence and strict adherence to pedagogical principles. The course is intended to cultivate students with a solid linguistic reinforcement of oral and writing skills, as well as the areas of study offered in the International Baccalaureate program. The courses are the ideal complement and enhancement to the French courses done in school. By the end of the program, students must be able to:

 

       Participate in a conversation and make a 3-4-minute oral presentation and afterward answer questions both on the presentation and of a general nature.

       Answer comprehension questions pertaining to a CEFR A2 level text.

       Write a 250-word text at a mid-A2 CEFR level. The subject is articles, speech, film critics.

 

French Fun Club: Beginner and advanced level 

The club is intended to provide an authentic French-language environment to help to improve students' language proficiency and confidence through culturally enriching activities, like:

       Theme of the week (or any interesting topics raised by students); "I love speaking French" Corner Art performance, movies, mini-concert, music, public speaking, etc.

       Guest speaker - monthly basis: a recognized Francophone speaker or FSL motivators will be invited in (ex. athletes, musician, performer, artists, etc.)

 

French Public Speaking:

Our public speaking instructor is specialized in public speaking training will provide student one-to-one advice with content preparation training, pronunciation correction, language proficiency, and presentation skills coaching. You will gain the knowledge, tips, and techniques to create an effective speech and deliver it with clarity, effectiveness, and confidence. This course also aims to increase the overall ability to capture and maintain the audience’s attention while remaining calm and strong. An ideal course for students who simply want to improve their oral communication skills in Canada’s second official language.

Parents Oral French:

This French course is intended to provide basic French for parents who have children in Core French or French Immersion so they can understand and help their children in French homework and other subjects in French. At the end of this course, parents will know: 

       The basic of French language context, background and culture contents;

       Daily conversation and small talk in French with a lot of listen and speaking practice 

       The fundamental French grammar, vocabulary and language rhythm.
